Telling Your Story for Your Internet Marketing Business Part 2: How to Capture Your Story

November 11th, 2009

My first article in the two-part series “Telling Your Story” presents an overview of why it’s essential to incorporate a personal story into an Internet marketing campaign. What follows is a brief description of the six steps that will facilitate the process of capturing your story.

Write a short outline of the key points you want to elaborate on. Don’t script it; rather, just jot down the most significant choices you made or actions you took on your entrepreneurial journey toward building an online business.

Describe to a friend how your online business developed. Don’t edit, don’t judge yourself-just get the words onto a recorder. Any questions your friend asks can help you clarify why you felt the way you did or why you made certain decisions. Which of these had the most impact in determining your future as an online business owner?

Listen to your recording and note which elements most strongly touch the nerve of the inner processes that resulted in your outer successes.

Summarize your story on paper as a sequence of events. Define the situation (sometimes described as the “pain”), the search for an answer, the discovery of the solution, and finally the powerful difference it made in your life. This is the storyboard for your video.

Capture your video. An outdoor location is neutral and usually a soothing and non-distracting backdrop for the viewer. Be sure that you record in a well-lit area away from direct sunlight.

Transfer the video to digital format on your computer, and then edit the finished product. Don’t try too hard to seem polished. Be authentic and be yourself-your personal story will resonate better with the viewer.

Remember, the honest retelling of the sequence of events (situation-search-discovery-results) should occupy no more than 3 minutes of video. Don’t be discouraged if it takes several attempts to capture it. Keep in mind that the more honestly your personal story is told, the easier it is to rehearse and the more compelling it will be to the listener. Have confidence in what you say and it will resonate with potential clients.

And don’t forget to enjoy the experience. One of the best reasons for establishing an online business is because of the joy of the journey!

Telling Your Story for Your Internet Marketing Business Part 1

November 11th, 2009

As a business entrepreneur, one of the most effective ways to connect with prospective customers and team members is by integrating your personal story into your Internet marketing campaign. First timers, however, may find it difficult or intimidating to translate a personal story into words or video. I’ve developed six simple steps that will assist you in capturing an honest and truthful personal story. Why do you need to tell your story as an Internet marketer?  Simply put, because your story has the power to change someone else’s life. Personal narratives give meanings and solutions to the fabric of our common existence. They connect us to our own lives and to the lives of others. If told with simplicity and sincerity, a personal story can offer hope to those who find themselves in a similar situation.

One caveat: An embellished or exaggerated personal story may result in the adverse manipulation of the listener’s actions or feelings. It can lead him or her to make inappropriate decisions, which will likely hurt them and will it detract from the messaging of your brand. Therefore, it is crucial that when you incorporate your personal story into your internet marketing campaign you stick to the truth. A personal story told with honesty and integrity is more likely to attract the right (read:  profitable) attention for your online business. So, where to begin? I’ve developed six simple steps to transform a personal story into an effective Internet marketing campaign. I’ll cover these steps in the following article entitled Capturing your Story for your Internet Marketing Business.          In conclusion, the best way to connect with your target audience is to relate the ups and downs of how you got into Internet marketing in the first place.  Those who find themselves on a similar path will be grateful to you for your insight and expertise. Your brand is more likely to be fixed permanently within their minds as the result of an emotional connection.  My next article will describe step-by-step just how easy it is to manufacture a compelling narrative out of your life experience. But remember, manufacturing in this case does not imply dishonesty. It merely indicates the act of translating your life’s journey into a compelling personal story for a targeted audience. Do it well, and the viability of your message will increase exponentially, as will the success of your brand.

How To Avoid With Internet Marketing Obstacles

November 11th, 2009

Did you know that as of November 2007 there were approximately 1,262,032,697 online according to the World Internet Usage and Population Data?
Just think about the numbers for awhile! More than 2 billion people are online right now…that’s remarkable, isn’t it?
Let’s think about this for awhile…among those more than two billion people, how many of them have visited your Website and browsed the pages? Or how many of them purchased one of your products or services? Or your affiliate products or services? or your Internet Marketing campaign?
Seems very depressing, correct?
But don’t be discouraged – because if you plan to create an Internet Marketing campaign, you’ll have a much better opportunity of making contacts and establish relationship with a few more of those who visited your website!
So let’s start by examining the four different stages people go through when visiting your Website when they’re online responding to your Internet Marketing campaign. Although these people are classified in different ways, the four different basic stages can be described as:
First Stage: Just surfing
Second Stage: Planning to buying
Third Stage: Ready to buy
Let’s begin taking up with the First Stage: Just Surfing
People who are in this stage are thinking for something when they visit your site or any other site. They want something – generally, right information – and they’re possibly not aware about systematic keywords, or the description of a particular product or service. They’re most likely using very generic one or two word searches to get substantial information about the topic or niche.
So, the best way to send a visitor to your Website through your is simply to provide them with abundance of general information in your Internet Marketing campaign. Like some methods of doing about:
• Writing articles about a specific and interesting topic
• Reviewing other people’s products or services and posting them to your Blog
• Offering a free and very informative newsletter about the topic or niche
• Interviewing experts in the industry, or arranging to be interviewed.
• Conducting free teleseminars
• Doing weekly or monthly Podcasts
Your objective should be to provide lots of useful information. The more information you provide your visitor – the more they’re going to remember you. And they will always think of you as they enter the buying cycle – and the more they believe YOU as the expert in your niche or industry – they will always respond quickly to your Internet Marketing campaign.
Now let’s go to the Second Stage: Thinking about Buying
People who are in this stage of the buying cycle usually already have the information they need. They understand what they want, and now they’re looking for reasons to justify why they should buy – they want to support their action with reason that they need it!
So to keep visitors who are thinking about buying, you must provide easy to get information of all the features of your product or service. If you’re selling cell phones, for example, this is where you should have lots of customer reviews, descriptions of the different features and benefits of the product and adequately provide “how to” information.
For example, you want to make someone find out easily how they can buy your product or service, how you ship it, how much is the shipping cost, what is your guarantee and what is your return policy.
Always do this, because you want to give them the logical reasons for their purchase. But always remember that you need to show them always what your product or service is going to benefit them at the same time – so be subtle, but push the benefits always.
By answering their “how” questions, you encourage them to move through the buying cycle, and you also give them the guarantee that you’re the one they want to do business with, because you’ve demonstrated to them how easy – and how secure – is the buying process.
Now, the Third Stage: Ready to Buy
People who are ready to buy will move through the sales process quickly and smoothly, if you’ve done your job correctly!
Here’s how to attract visitors who are ready to buy to your website. You’ve given them the right information and you have satisfactorily answered their “what” and “how” questions and they feel great about making an intelligent decision. So now you appeal to your visitor’s “emotional” plane.
On this stage, you start piling up all the information about the benefits and goodies and infuse the feeling of urgency!
Always make sure to give your visitors “future images” to get them thinking about the benefits of your product or service, and how it would make them happy and satisfied.
Here are a couple of concrete examples: For example if you’re selling lawn services, , you’re not actually selling a greener lawn. You’re selling pride in them, in their home, being envied by all of all their neighbors because of their beautiful yard!
Or if you’re selling dental care services, you’re really not selling tooth extraction and replacement. You’re selling sex appeal, and beauty and being instantly more attractive to the opposite sex, having well-balanced teeth.
You’re appealing to the person’s basic needs to look nice and to make people think that you care about themselves, about way they look and feel.
See how easy is that?
So, you pile on the reight information about the benefits. Always remember to take all the burden from the buyer’s shoulders. Offer a reliable guarantee – and always be very clear about what is exactly your guarantee. Give them the right information.
Always add a sense of urgency to the offer – something needs to be bound by time – or of insufficient quantity. (People hate thinking that they’re going to miss out on a bargain.) This is very essential in your Internet Marketing campaign.
And add enough relevance and benefits that your visitor feels like they’d be very unfortunate to miss out on your offer.
That’s really all it takes to be. By following these simple steps, you’ll be able to turn those frustrating internet marketing blues into a “Happy and Joyful!” song as you watch people visit your Website – and buy – and come back to buy again – and your sales – hit the high pitch!

Will Internet Marketing Work for Your Business?

November 10th, 2009

This is an extremely difficult question to answer because there are so many complex factors involved. Specifically they techniques you employ in your Internet marketing campaign as well as the execution of these techniques can determine whether or not Internet marketing will work for your business. Additionally, the likelihood of your target audience using the Internet and responding to your marketing efforts should also be considered into the equation. This article will outline the potential for success in an Internet marketing campaign. Before making the decision to embark on an Internet marketing campaign you should carefully consider your target audience. The Internet is used widely around the world but whether or not members of your target audience are likely to utilize the Internet to research or purchase the products or services you sell is not guaranteed. This is significant because investing a great deal of time, effort and money into Internet marketing when your target audience is not likely to respond to these efforts is not worthwhile. Conducting market research can do a great deal to help you determine whether or not you should invest in an Internet marketing campaign for your business. This step is very important because it will give you a good indication of whether or not you should even begin marketing your business on the Internet. Hiring a firm specializing in market research is recommended because they can conduct this research quickly and efficiently and will likely gain a great deal of valuable information as a result of their research efforts. If they determine your business can benefit from an Internet marketing campaign, it is time to start thinking about how you want to advertise your business online.Again, seeking the help of professionals can be an extremely worthwhile investment. If you are not well versed in the industry of Internet marketing, hiring a firm with a great deal of expertise in this industry can be very helpful. They can assist you by consulting with you to determine which marketing strategies will be most effective, designing advertisements for your campaign, helping you to orchestrate your Internet marketing campaign and evaluating the results of marketing efforts to determine which strategies are working and which are not. The potential for success with an Internet marketing campaign is virtually limitless. The success you enjoy is only limited by your ability to promote your products and services and execute effective marketing strategies. Some of the marketing strategies you may wish to employ may include optimizing your website for relevant search terms, placing links to your website judiciously on the Internet, writing and publishing e-newsletters and utilizing affiliates to promote your website. Search engine optimization (SEO) is one of the most important aspects of any Internet marketing campaign. SEO is so important because it dictates the ranking of your website on popular search engines. Internet users value these results and are not likely to seek out websites which do not rank well with search engines. Conversely, high ranking websites can enjoy a great deal of increased website traffic as a result of these rankings. Inbound links to your website are also important in Internet marketing. Inbound links are links on other websites which direct users to your website. These links are important in an Internet marketing campaign. First of all many search engines factor inbound links into their ranking algorithms which means inbound links can result in higher search engines rankings. Also, these links can be used directly by website users to access your website. This means you can gain traffic directly from these links. Another way to enjoy a successful Internet marketing campaign is to orchestrate an affiliate marketing campaign. Affiliates are essentially website owners who place a banner ad on their website to direct traffic to your website. Typically, affiliates are only compensated when the advertisement on their website produces a desired effect such as enticing the users to click through the advertisement, resulting in a sale or resulting in another action such as filling out a survey or registering with your website. Affiliate marketing can not only be highly effective but it is also cost effective because you only pay the affiliates when they produce results.

Alleviate Your Internet Marketing Stress

November 10th, 2009

Do you have a detailed plan in place to market your home-based Internet business? How about a strategy that will work for your budget? Do you know where to start?

If not, read on. This article is an Internet marketing resource that you will find invaluable. It is a free Internet marketing guide.

Five questions you need to ask yourself: 1) Who is my target customer? 2) What is my budget? 3) Where will I find my customers? 4) Why do they need my product or service? 5) How quickly do I want results?

Your budget will probably be the most significant factor in determining your Internet marketing program.

Organic marketing is definitely the cheapest. Organic marketing is getting people to your site to purchase without paying for advertising. It is; however, more time consuming and takes longer to see results. This strategy will be discussed in more detail in my next article.

If your budget is more extensive, you can obtain results quickly through strategies, such as Pay Per Click, which will also be discussed at a later date.

Get your groundwork done first…whatever way you choose to market! First, determine the customer you want to attract. Who are they? Focusing on a certain “kind” of customer will greatly improve your chances of exposing them to your business. You have to know where your potential customer is looking so you can be there too…staring them in the face.

Next, give thought to why someone would require your service or product. That will give you clues about what keywords they will enter and what sites they hang out on. Then you can decide, for example, if you’d like to advertise on those sites. You can also make your website keyword rich.

Whoever puts forth the most effort in planning and executing their Internet marketing campaign WINS! It’s just that easy. The businesses that are most visible get the most paying customers. We witness the same concept with successful “brick and mortar” businesses who are marketing geniuses. Why would an Internet business be any different?

Answer the 5 questions above and join me next week as I discuss organic marketing as an option to paid advertising. It promises to be gooood!

How an Effective Internet Marketing Campaign Taught Me a Lesson and Made Me Give Pay-per-click Advertising Another Chance

November 4th, 2009

As a Marketing veteran with over 20 years of experience, and nearly a decade in internet marketing alone, coupled with being a native New Yorker, there usually isn’t much a company can do in the way of internet advertising that can get me to buy.

After awhile, I got quite jaded with all the standard squeeze pages that beg me to cough up my prized e-mail address with their umpteenth free newsletter, outlandish claims of internet riches and a “last seat on the bus” mentality with either a “just 52 left at this price” or “you’ve got 1 hour, 12 minutes and 6 seconds to buy” (complete with a second-by-second ticker to try and stress me out).

I have to admit though, even I can be bought. That’s what happened when I received an e-mail from a mailing list I was on for an article marketing site called ArticlesBase (http://www.articlesbase.com) that helps me do some very solid internet marketing. Since they have been very responsive and helpful, I was willing to give the kind of hokey e-mail offer they sent me a chance. Besides I love to study what others are doing for their internet marketing efforts—-boy do I get some great ideas!

When I clicked on the requisite link and saw the headline, I thought, “oh boy, here we go again. Could this BE any more outrageous a claim?” Yet I have to admit, it hooked me because it was about Pay-Per-Click Advertising. Instinctively, I shivered seeing those words “Pay-Per-Click Advertising”, because it brought back really bad memories of previous attempts I made at using these services for three different endeavors-—to sell one of my early e-books; to try and drum up mortgage and real estate leads; and to sell a piece of real estate. All of these sucked the money out of my Pay-Per-Click accounts faster than just about anything I had ever seen—-even for low-cost keywords of just 5 cents each!

I should have known better, as all of the successful internet marketing consulting work I have done for myself and my clients never required a single Pay-Per Click expenditure. But every time you go do a search on Google or Yahoo!, the pages are crawling with these ads, so you figure, “these pay-per-click ads must be working for someone or they wouldn’t all be here. I’ll try one more time”. It might as well have been Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown after sincerely promising not to do it ever again. You just know the outcome!

Anyway, so naturally when I saw this well-crafted example of a squeeze page http://www.sunloverpublishing.com/google.html about a secret for getting pay-per-click ads for free, I hate to admit it, but it hit a nerve and drew me in. So much so that after reading it, and letting the clock on the cookie-encoded page tick down for a few hours, and then a few hours more, later that night I decided, what the heck? I had wasted a lot more money on my previous Pay-Per-Click escapades than what this sharp internet marketer was asking for, and they got me.

Was I satisfied with the money I spent on learning “the pay-per-click advertising secret?” Actually yes. I don’t expect to get rich overnight from the technique described, although I can see that it has potential. But I had to give the person who thought it up my kudos, as it is something I hate to admit I did not think of myself that should have been very obvious to me. In addition, as a marketing professional, I really appreciated the careful crafting of the advertising message and the way “the Pay-Per-Click advertising secret” was unveiled in the e-book I bought. Plus, there were some very good internet marketing resources mentioned in the e-book, as well as on the company’s affiliate marketing pages, that I had not known about before.

Even if I never use the main technique described regarding the Pay-Per-Click advertising secret (although I am definitely going to give it a try because it makes worlds of sense), I still feel I got my money’s worth on being able to study a skilled marketing campaign, and to get additional resources that will certainly help any of my internet marketing endeavors for myself and my clients.

So even if you think you know it all, and have heard it all, when it comes to internet marketing, it can’t hurt to open your mind every now and then to a well-done, enticing offer. You just might learn something.

Postcards Can Be an Effective Addition to Any Internet Marketing Campaign

November 4th, 2009

Postcards are a cost effective way to advertise your company. They are serious marketing tools and act as tiny billboards with a big message. Postcards are great for spreading the news and are an inexpensive way to contact prospects and up sell services to current customers. They are also a great way to stay in front of your target audience.
Postcards are less expensive to send out than regular mail and are typically used when the sales message is simple and brief. Double postcards can act as a response vehicle as well because they can also provide feedback from your customers.
Another advantage of post cards is that in most mail rooms and offices any envelope that even resembles advertising is thrown away, usually unopened, whereas postcards tend to be delivered as intended.
There are many options available when using postcards as a marketing tool. You can mail them, hand them out, post them on a bulletin board or leave them in a display. They can be used to create attention, belief and a need because they have eye appeal. Postcards are most effective in announcing an event or to advertise a new product.
They are usually associated with happy memories because we all enjoy getting postcards from friends and family on holidays. And as such they tend to be viewed by the recipient as more of a personal message from the sender rather than just more advertising or junk mail.
Variable data postcards are also attractive, if designed correctly. Variable Data Printing occurs when the messaging, images and offer on each mail piece is customized according to the preferences of each recipient on your list. It’s simply the most effective way to increase response, drive sales and boost your Return on Investment.
Some general rules of thumb which can contribute to a successful postcard campaign are first of all, keep it simple. Don’t overload your customers with too much information or too many graphics. Keep your message short and to the point. Make it a quick read and leave your customers wanting to know more.
Whatever your mission is, whether it’s to advertise your product or service, to brand your business, to provide a friendly reminder to clients that you’re still around, or to promote an upcoming sale, postcards can flood your target market at a low cost.
Today’s technology enables even the smallest business to treat hundreds of customers as individuals. This gives the impression that the individual customer is special and worth getting to know. A good postcard can be viewed as a personal greeting from a business and can give the recipient a special feeling.
Make your postcard stand out from the crowd. With today’s technology and computer graphics you can make your message eye catching and memorable. You have to remember it’s likely to be the first impression you’re making on this potential client.
A key point to remember with regard to any direct mail campaign is that some people respond more quickly than others to a message or offer. Some people may contact you after one mailing while some others may take four or five communications before responding.
So it helps to know your target audience and it also helps to have patience and not to pull the plug on your postcard marketing campaign before it has the chance to achieve the desired result.

Is Your Internet Marketing Campaign Working For You?

October 31st, 2009

Determining whether or not your Internet marketing campaign is working for you is a very important part of the advertising process. This is so important because while there is a great deal of Internet marketing which can be done without a great deal of expense, other types of Internet marketing do have financial costs associated with them. Also, in both cases there is a time and energy burden to orchestrating the Internet marketing. For all of these reasons it is important for business owners to continuously evaluate their marketing techniques and strategies to determine what is working and what is not. This will help the business owner to focus his efforts on marketing strategies which are providing positive results as opposed to those which are either not providing results or are only providing lackluster results. This article will examine a few different marketing strategies as well as how business owners can evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies.

Affiliate marketing is certainly one of the most cost effective Internet marketing strategies available. This marketing strategy involves having other website owners known as affiliates post an advertisement on their websites to direct Internet traffic to your website. This marketing strategy is cost effective because in most cases the affiliate is only paid when he produces a desired result such as enticing an Internet user to click through the advertisement or to purchase a product or service once they click through the ad. While the business owner is only paying for the advertisement when it produces a desired effect, it is still worthwhile to evaluate the effectiveness of these ads to determine whether or not they are working well.

Fortunately affiliate marketing ads have a natural feedback mechanism which makes it easy to evaluate how well the ad is working. This feedback is provided in the form of code imbedded in the advertisement which specifies which affiliate generated the website visitors. This information is provided for the purposes of issuing payment to the affiliate but it can also provide the business owner with useful information on which affiliate ads are the most effective. This information is especially useful when the affiliates are posting different ads. The business owner may conclude the ads posted by the more successful affiliates are more appealing to potential customers and may opt to use this style of ad for all of their affiliates.

Business owners who use Internet marketing strategies such as posting on message boards to promote their business might want to consider asking customers to complete a short survey when making a purchase. This survey can include useful demographic information which is always helpful for marketing as well as information regarding where the customer learned of the products or services you offer. Including the message board web address as one of the responses will give you a good indication of whether or not the message boards are helping to drive customers to your website. You may also have some unofficial feedback in terms of the response to your postings on the message board. If the general consensus is in support of your posts, you may infer you are generating some interest in your business or website through this tactic.

Finally, an Internet marketing strategy can be evaluated by studying website traffic results as well as sales receipts. Anytime you implement a new Internet marketing strategy or technique it is worthwhile to study your website traffic reports and sales receipts carefully to determine whether or not there is a spike in either traffic or sales immediately after the marketing effort. For example, if you send out an e-newsletter to those who have requested additional information about your products or services, you may notice there is an increase in traffic or sales soon afterwards. This is a good indication the e-newsletter was well received and effective. However, if there is not a marked increase in traffic or sales subsequent to the e-newsletter it indicates the marketing effort was not effective.

Internet Marketing Campaign-How Do You Write One That Sells?

October 30th, 2009

With the latest technology flourishing and booming in its greatest extent, it is never a doubt that marketers would definitely opt for internet as a medium of advertising and promoting ones product. Starting off your internet marketing campaign would be one of the best ways to begin with your dealings for greater profits to come your way. The idea of email marketing would sound just as right isn’t it? A lot of beginner marketers prefer this type of strategy to come up with something that will definitely push the button and strike a chord. However, you should not only look for those providers that will help you send emails to vast number of online users rather, look for the provider’s reputability and effectiveness in order for your promotional statement to reach your clients.
Another internet marketing campaign that you can use to make the flow of your marketing business on track is to continuously monitor the development, changes as well as the progress of your campaign. Some marketers would use the first step yet; fall short on providing maintenance for their launched campaign. Thus, you have to rigorously monitor if there will be cases such as: email sent marked as unread, email going directly on the spam section or bounced messages. These are some of the factors to look at when you are employing this type of strategy.
Another area you need to consider as you launch your internet marketing campaign is to see through statistical figures if there are areas you need to improve and facets where you become successful. For areas needing improvement, you have to search for other apposite techniques to make it work for the better likewise, determine how competitors thrive with strategies that you fail to apply. For areas where you exhibit your campaign strength, you should also incessantly hone and develop your grounds to maintain the lead in this particular area.
Internet marketing campaign will never be complete if traffic is not present. Once you develop your own site with the product or services in it, you also need to consider that traffic is one of the most important aspects to consider in your marketing campaign that can be in the simple form of writing substantial articles. When this happens, the campaign you’ve launched will be as efficient as the product you sell and would eventually provide more takings to your advantage.
